When I first arrived at Liberty, I started to hear the phrase, “We are fighting FROM victory, not FOR victory.” The idea behind this is that because Christ has already died on the cross as the sacrifice for our sins and is seated at the right hand of the Father in heaven, that death has been defeated and we as believers have won the war because of Christ. When we face trials, sin, difficulties, uncertainty, in life, we do not have to do battle in an attempt to win of our own abilities, but we wage war in daily battles from the confidence that we are already victorious in Jesus.
Ephesians 6:12 tell us, “For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.” Every day on earth is a battle to remain steadfast in our relationship with the Lord and to honor him in everything we say, do, and think.
Therefore, we must put on the Armor of God.
What is putting on the armor of God going to do for us? It will make us strong in the Lord, able to stand against the schemes of the devil! When we put on the armor of God, we can stand firm in our faith, fighting from a place of victory. (vs. 10-12)
To start, we put on the belt of truth. The belt is the central part of the armor — it is what holds everything together. So to, in our day to day need to be centered on truth. Priscilla Shirer says that, “Truth is your core support. It provides the essential backing you need when you’re in the midst of spiritual war.” (The Armor of God) This truth we need is found in Christ and his character and teaching.
Breastplate of Righteousness
The next piece of armor we are to put on is the breastplate of righteousness. In war, the breastplate protects the chest, mainly your heart, from enemy strike. Both the physical heart and spiritual heart are vitally important to the survival and functioning of mankind. Proverbs 4:23 tells us to guard our hearts above all else because it is the source of life, spiritual life. Guarding our hearts by putting on the breastplate of righteousness means living a life in line with the truth of God.
Shoes of Peace
The shoes of peace are rooted in the message of the Gospel. As Believers, we can live in peace regardless of circumstance because we know that God is in control and loves the world so much that he sent his only Son to save the world. (John 3:16) This great sacrifice is evidence enough that when we commit our lives to Him, we can trust his plans. And he will deliver a peace that surpasses all understanding! (Philippians 4:7)
Shield of Faith
The purpose of the shield of faith is to “stop the fiery arrows of the devil.” The shield is our first line of defense. It protects us from oncoming distractions and temptations. And when we use it, walking forward in faith, believing in the truth of God, we are able to ward of the fiery arrows of the devil.
Helmet of Salvation
The purpose of this piece of armor is a given — you gotta protect your head. Protecting your brain is vital for surviving spiritually. Priscilla Shirer writes, “Because as long as you don’t apply salvation to your life, you’ll still be vulnerable to his attacks every day for the rest of your life, even if you’ve gotten saved.” What she means by this is that if you live like you have not already been bought at a price (1 Corinthians 6:20), you are more susceptible to the lies of the devil that tell you that you are worthless. You need to preach the Gospel to yourself everyday as a reminder of where you have been, but where you are now because of the grace of God.
Sword of the Spirit
The sword of the spirit is the word of God. This part of the armor does not just protect, but it defends as well. The Word of God reveals God’s character, his desire for us as Believers, and truth for us to align our lives by. To utilize our sword best, we must be in the Word consistently, memorizing Scripture, and in daily communication with our Heavenly Father.
Finally, we need to pray. Pray for ourselves. Pray for our families. Pray for our friends, communities, and coworkers. We need to pray for the Church. We need to pray for world leaders. The devil has come to steal, kill, and destroy. Battling his schemes is not something we can do alone. Prayer is a weapon that engages relationships. It helps us help others go into spiritual battle more protected.
Fighting from victory, allows us to walk through life in confidence and not condemnation. It relieves the pressure to be perfect and to be responsible for winning a war because we can rest in the knowledge that our God has conquered all. So friend, put on your armor, stay steadfast in your relationship with the Lord, and go to battle from a place of victory and not defeat.
